El pelotón entró en modo preparación. Era marzo de 1979 y Álvaro tenía la misión de formar, tanto militar como políticamente, al grupo que, junto con los compañeros del Frente Uno, sería el encargado de declarar la Guerra Popular y Revolucionaria e iniciar las acciones político-militares. La narración de Giacomo y la cuidada banda sonora nos transportan al bosque nuboso en las faldas del volcán Santo Tomás —también conocido como volcán Pecul— en el Occidente de Guatemala.
Fueron meses de febril actividad: la construcción de un campo de obstáculos, extenuantes ejercicios tácticos en el terreno bajo intensas lluvias, y las rutinas del campamento —buscar agua, montar guardia, recolectar leña, cocinar—. También hubo espacio para la alfabetización, el estudio político y la preparación física. Fue un tiempo que Álvaro recuerda con cariño.
Seremos testigos de la llegada de nuevos combatientes a la montaña y del emotivo reencuentro con el Patojo y Meme, así como de la trágica muerte de Esteban y Luis Ixmatá en un retén policiaco en Ciudad de Guatemala. Javier pondrá a prueba las habilidades de Álvaro para orientarse y desplazarse solo por la montaña.
El diálogo posterior entre Buonafina y Rosal profundiza en lo escuchado en el sonolibro en un permanente cuestionamiento de las justificaciones éticas y morales para alzarse en armas y contextualiza ese momento dentro de la situación mundial de entonces.
 
The platoon entered preparation mode. It was March 1979, and Álvaro had the mission of training the group, both militarily and politically. Together with their comrades from Front One, they would be tasked with declaring the People’s Revolutionary War and launching political-military actions. Giacomo’s narration and the carefully crafted soundtrack transport us to the cloud forest on the slopes of Santo Tomás Volcano—also known as Pecul Volcano—in western Guatemala.
These were months of feverish activity: the construction of an obstacle course, grueling tactical drills in the rain-soaked terrain, and the daily routines at the camp—fetching water, standing guard, collecting firewood, cooking. Literacy lessons, political education, and physical training also filled the days. It was a time Álvaro remembers fondly.
We learn of the arrival of new combatants in the mountains and the reunion with El Patojo and Meme, as well as the tragic deaths of Esteban and Luis Ixmatá at a police checkpoint in Guatemala City. Javier will test Álvaro’s ability to navigate and move through the mountain alone.
The later dialogue between Buonafina and Rosal delves deeper into what was heard in the audiobook and contextualizes the moment within the broader global situation at the time—marked by an ongoing questioning of the ethical and moral justifications for taking up arms.
 

Podcast #7 - La Subida a la Montaña

En este episodio cargado de acción, seguimos a Álvaro en su llegada a Guatemala haciendo escala en Tegucigalpa , con un ojo morado, recuerdo del Carnaval de Panamá.  Esteban lo está esperando en el aeropuerto y pronto salen disparados en el Golf GTI rojo ya conocido, rumbo a la casa de seguridad de Antonio, su compañera Yambré y su hijito de tres años, el Chato, a quienes Álvaro compara con José, María y el niño Jesús.  En la casa lo espera Sebastián ahora Pablo,  podrán compartir unos días antes de partir cada uno a sus respectivos frentes. 
 
El episodio cobra aún más intensidad con la aparición del Comandante en Jefe Gaspar Ilóm, que muchos años después se enteraría de que era el hijo del Premio Nobel de Literatura Miguel Ángel Asturias.  Gaspar les informó que Pablo iría al Frente Uno al mando de Luis Ixmatá y Álvaro al Frente Dos bajo el mando de Javier Tambriz. 
 
La verdadera tensión comienza con un peligroso trayecto en Jeep, cargado de armas y provisiones, hacia la casa de la abuelita en una pequeña aldea al pie de la montaña.  De la oscuridad salen los guerrilleros con los que emprenderá la dura y larga marcha para llegar al Campamento El Paraíso. Así inicia la vida guerrillera de nuestro protagonista. 
 
In this action-packed episode, we follow Álvaro as he arrives in Guatemala, making a stop in Tegucigalpa, bearing a black eye—a souvenir from the Panama Carnival. Esteban awaits him at the airport, and soon they speed off in the familiar red Golf GTI toward the safe house of Antonio, his partner Yambré, and their three-year-old son, Chato, whom Álvaro compares to Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus. At the house, Sebastián—now known as Pablo—awaits him, and they will have a few days together before departing for their respective fronts.
 
The episode intensifies with the arrival of Commander-in-Chief Gaspar Ilóm, who, years later, Álvaro  would learn that he was the son of Nobel Prize-winning writer Miguel Ángel Asturias. Gaspar informs them that Pablo will head to Front One under the command of Luis Ixmatá, while Álvaro will go to Front Two, led by Javier Tambriz.
 
The real tension begins with a perilous journey in a Jeep loaded with weapons and supplies, heading toward The Grany’s House in a small village at the foot of the mountain. From the darkness, guerrilla fighters emerge, with whom Álvaro embarks on the arduous and lengthy march to reach Camp El Paraíso. Thus begins our protagonist’s guerrilla life.

La vida militar implica transformaciones físicas y mentales que el narrador nos hace experimentar. La banda sonora dispara nuestra imaginación, y pronto nos encontramos viendo a los ocho guerrilleros aprendiendo a moverse como un solo organismo, perfectamente sincronizado.
Termina el entrenamiento, y del cuartel pasamos a bailar en las calles de La Habana durante el 20º aniversario de la Revolución. Ante la inminente ofensiva final sandinista en Nicaragua, el general Omar Torrijos abre sus fronteras para facilitar el trasiego de combatientes y armamento. Entre cientos de guerrilleros sandinistas y miembros del FMLN de El Salvador, se mimetizan los ocho guerrilleros guatemaltecos de nuestra historia.
Giacomo y Rafa entablan un diálogo que nos lleva del análisis de la naturaleza militar al cuestionamiento de la frontera entre el bien y el mal.
 
Military life involves physical and mental transformations that the narrator makes us experience. The soundtrack ignites our imagination, and soon we find ourselves watching the eight guerrilla fighters learning to move as a single, perfectly synchronized organism.
The training ends, and from the barracks, we transition to dancing in the streets of Havana during the 20th anniversary of the Revolution. Faced with the imminent final Sandinista offensive in Nicaragua, General Omar Torrijos opens his borders to facilitate the movement of combatants and weaponry. Among hundreds of Sandinista guerrillas and members of El Salvador’s FMLN, the eight Guatemalan guerrilla fighters of our story blend in.

The Memorias de Amor y de Guerra podcasts are weekly episodes of the audiobook of the same name, where Giacomo Buonafina brings to life the protagonist of Rafael Rosal’s autobiographical book. In this third episode, we’ll listen to chapters 4 and 5.
Each podcast consists of three parts: an introduction to the week’s audiobook segment, the audiobook excerpt, and an informal, irreverent discussion between Buonafina—host of Radio Amplitud—and Rosal, where they exchange perspectives and compare experiences from opposite backgrounds.
The point of no return begins. The eight future guerrilla fighters, whom we will call The Squad, split into pairs to embark on their challenging journey to Cuba. Álvaro travels alongside Neto, a 24-year-old university student with an Arab look and the physique of an American football player.

También conocido como el terremoto social, 33 segundos de destrucción y al menos 30 mil muertos, dejaron en evidencia la miseria y vulnerabilidad de la mayoritaria población indígena. Rafael y un grupo de amigos del Colegio Americano, organizan una pequeña brigada para apoyar las tareas de reconstrucción en la pequeña ciudad de Comalapa. Allí, entre los escombros, encuentra al hermano mayor de un amigo y, sin imaginarlo, da el primer paso en un proceso delicado y peligroso que lo llevará a las filas del movimiento guerrillero clandestino.
 
The Earthquake
"The thunderous roar of a gigantic underground monster woke me up at 3:33:33 in the early morning of February 4, 1976," thus begins Rafael’s story. A 15-year-old from a well-off middle-class background, but with a family history spanning at least a century of social struggles, in that forgotten country that is Guatemala. Also known as the social earthquake, 33 seconds of destruction and at least 30,000 deaths exposed the misery and vulnerability of the majority Indigenous population. Rafael and a group of friends from the American School organized a small brigade to support reconstruction efforts in the small city of Comalapa. There, among the rubble, he finds the older brother of a friend, and without realizing it, takes the first step in a delicate and dangerous process that will lead him into the ranks of the clandestine guerrilla
