Los días se convirtieron en semanas, las semanas en meses, y en un abrir y cerrar de ojos pasaron tres años de actividad febril. Entre jornadas de transmisión en el monte y la vida de pueblo, la relación entre Laura y Álvaro fue languideciendo, hasta terminar no sin amarguras. Comones vio en ello una oportunidad para dar rienda suelta a sus reprimidos deseos de cortejar a Laura, borrando la frontera entre militancia, subordinación y celos.
Mientras tanto, la guerra había entrado en un impasse, y ya se empezaba a hablar de su posible finalización mediante una negociación política. No pocos oficiales y combatientes decidieron bajar de la montaña. Las discusiones entre Comones y Álvaro se volvían cada vez más agrias; era evidente que sus diferencias políticas apenas disimulaban un antagonismo personal. Las transmisiones se hacían más largas, contraviniendo todas las medidas de seguridad. En las carreteras aumentaron los puestos de control y la circulación de camiones militares con antenas parabólicas. Era obvio que los estaban buscando.
 
Álvaro, con razón o sin ella, interpretó todo esto como parte de un plan de Comones para que fueran capturados y él quedara con el camino libre hacia Laura. De una u otra forma, todos se sentían mutuamente traicionados.
 
Un evento inesperado vino a ser el catalizador de toda esta tensión. Una mañana, mientras Laura abría la veterinaria, vio con espanto un camión militar con antenas parabólicas estacionado frente a la casa. Afortunadamente, el camión se retiró poco después, pero los protocolos indicaban que debían desmontar el Centro de Comunicaciones como medida de emergencia.
 
No hubo consignas ni palabras bonitas. Álvaro se subió a un autobús rumbo a la Ciudad de México, con la Escuela de Cine en Cuba como destino final.
Laura y Álvaro nunca más se volvieron a ver.
 
Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and in the blink of an eye, three years of feverish activity had passed. Between transmission shifts in the mountains and village life, Laura and Álvaro’s relationship slowly faded—ending not without bitterness. Comones saw this as an opportunity to act on his repressed desire to court Laura, blurring the lines between militancy, subordination, and jealousy.
 
Meanwhile, the war had reached a stalemate, and talk of ending it through political negotiation had begun. Many officers and fighters chose to come down from the mountains. The arguments between Comones and Álvaro grew increasingly bitter; their political differences barely concealed a personal antagonism. Transmissions became longer, violating all security protocols. Military checkpoints multiplied along the roads, and trucks with satellite antennas roamed the area. It was clear they were being hunted.
 
Álvaro—rightly or wrongly—believed it was all part of a plan by Comones to get them captured and clear the way to Laura. One way or another, everyone felt betrayed.
 
Then came the catalyst. One morning, as Laura opened the veterinary clinic, she was horrified to see a military truck with large satellite antennas parked in front of the house. Fortunately, it left shortly after, but protocol dictated that the Communications Center be dismantled immediately.
 
There were no slogans, no farewell speeches. Álvaro boarded a bus bound for Mexico City, with Cuba’s Film School as his final destination.
Laura and Álvaro never saw each other again.

Podcast #27 - El Centro de Comunicaciones

Con la llegada del tío David se completa el equipo que deberá montar la Veterinaria de La Costa y crear las condiciones para poner operativo el Centro de Comunicaciones Clandestino para el Comandante en Jefe Gaspar.   Las siguientes semanas son de trabajo intenso, los tres se integran como un gran equipo de trabajo, con iniciativa, creatividad y entusiasmo.
Álvaro y Laura buscan cualquier momento para darse besos a escondidas del tío. La veterinaria es inaugurada con gran éxito y simultáneamente el Centro de Comunicaciones empieza a funcionar.   Convierten el Golf VW en una farmacia veterinaria y unidad de comunicación ambulante de extraordinaria eficiencia.  
A los pocos meses Álvaro recibe la noticia de que pronto llegará su madre a visitarlo. El encuentro es muy emotivo y llaman por teléfono a Jorge, el hermano mayor y acuerdan su salida del país con toda su familia. Jorge es secuestrado por el Ejército un día antes de su salida.   A pesar del duro golpe, Álvaro se concentra aún más en el trabajo y al final del año reciben una carta de felicitación de Gaspar. Había razones para celebrar, Laura y Álvaro parecían felices.
 
With Uncle David’s arrival, the team is complete.
They’re now ready to set up The Coastal Veterinary Clinic and create the conditions needed to launch the Clandestine Communications Center for Commander-in-Chief Gaspar. The following weeks are filled with intense work. The three of them come together as a strong, dynamic team—full of initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm.
Álvaro and Laura steal kisses whenever the uncle isn’t looking. The veterinary clinic opens successfully, and at the same time, the Communications Center begins operating. They convert the VW Golf into a mobile veterinary pharmacy and a highly efficient communications unit. A few months later, Álvaro receives news that his mother will soon be visiting.
The reunion is deeply emotional. They call Jorge, the older brother, and arrange for him and his family to leave the country. But Jorge is kidnapped by the Army the day before their departure. Despite the devastating blow, Álvaro throws himself even more into his work. By year’s end, they receive a congratulatory letter from Gaspar. There was reason to celebrate—Laura and Álvaro seemed happy.

Tras recorrer la zona comercial de Huixtla, Laura y Álvaro deciden que el negocio que abrirán como fachada para el Centro de Comunicaciones Clandestino será una farmacia veterinaria. Ambos tenían experiencia previa con animales de granja, por distintas razones.
José Comones les da luz verde para seguir adelante con el plan. Laura y Álvaro deben viajar a Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital del estado de Chiapas, para obtener las licencias comerciales que les permitan operar legalmente. Durante el trayecto, se hace evidente la creciente atracción entre ellos: el inicio de una historia de amor.
After exploring the commercial district of Huixtla, Laura and Álvaro decide that the business they’ll open as a front for the Clandestine Communications Center will be a veterinary pharmacy. Both had prior experience with farm animals for different reasons.
José Comones gives them the green light to move forward with the plan. Laura and Álvaro must travel to Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of the state of Chiapas, to obtain the commercial licenses that will allow them to operate legally. During the journey, the growing attraction between them becomes evident—the beginning of a love story.

Laura, una atractiva pelirroja que Álvaro había conocido en Managua dos años atrás, es asignada para interpretar el papel de su “esposa”. Juntos deben crear las condiciones necesarias para poner en marcha el Centro de Comunicaciones Clandestino destinado al Comandante Gaspar.
 
Giacomo and Rafael title this episode as a nod to the 1970s TV series Get Smart, using it to break the ice and add a touch of humor to the situation.
Laura, a striking redhead Álvaro had met in Managua two years earlier, is assigned to play the role of his “wife.” Together, they must create the conditions necessary to activate the Clandestine Communications Center for Commander Gaspar.

Álvaro finalmente había puesto en funcionamiento la incipiente red de radios entre los frentes, cuando recibió órdenes de la Comandancia para trasladarse a Tapachula, donde “deberá crear un centro de comunicaciones clandestino” para el Comandante en Jefe Gaspar Ilom (Rodrigo Asturias), quien evidentemente había decidido no entrar a Guatemala.
 
Álvaro sintió un gran alivio al cruzar la frontera con México. Estaba cansado de la guerra: demasiadas bajas, demasiadas deserciones, demasiado de todo.
Así comienza una nueva etapa en la vida conspirativa de Álvaro, quien, de ahora en adelante, se llamará Álvaro García de Castro.
 
It was March 1983. Álvaro had finally set up the fledgling radio network between the fronts when he received orders from the Command to relocate to Tapachula, where he was instructed to “establish a clandestine communications center” for Commander-in-Chief Gaspar Ilom (Rodrigo Asturias), who had clearly decided not to enter Guatemala.
 
Álvaro felt a deep sense of relief as he crossed the border into Mexico. He was weary of the war—too many casualties, too many desertions, too much of everything.
Thus began a new chapter in Álvaro’s conspiratorial life, under the name Álvaro García de Castro.

En el podcast anterior, nos enteramos de cómo Álvaro logró regresar al punto de partida: el Campamento “La Peluqueria”, donde habían sufrido un ataque contundente por parte de la tropa élite del Ejército, los temibles “Kaibiles”.  Aquí Álvaro pudo encontrar, mezclados con el lodo de la tierra, granos, azúcar, harina, incluso té y café, que los soldados habían esparcido en su paso destructor. 
 
No muy lejos del campamento, habían dos buzones clandestinos, uno con la radio y todo el equipo para su funcionamiento y el otro con cápsulas detonantes y otros equipos militares. Álvaro tenía la esperanza de que el Comandante Anibal mandaría a Chilo o a Amilcar a buscar la radio y por esta razón cada tercer día iba a dejar las hojas de su diario para que supieran que estaba muy cerca escondido.
 
Álvaro calculaba que tenía provisiones para sobrevivir dos semanas, pasado ese tiempo tendría que buscar salir de la montaña por sus propios medios. Era una apuesta de tiempo y paciencia.
 
 
In the previous podcast, we learned how Álvaro managed to return to his starting point: Camp “La Peluquería,” where they had suffered a brutal attack by the elite army troops—the feared Kaibiles. There, Álvaro found grains, sugar, flour, even tea and coffee mixed into the muddy ground, scattered by the soldiers during their destructive advance.
 
Not far from the camp, there were two hidden caches: one containing the radio and all the equipment needed to operate it, and the other filled with detonator capsules and other military gear. Álvaro hoped that Commander Aníbal would send Chilo or Amílcar to retrieve the radio, and for that reason, every third day he would leave pages from his journal, so they would know he was hiding nearby.
 
Álvaro estimated he had enough provisions to survive for two weeks. After that, he would have to find a way out of the mountain on his own. It was a gamble of time and patience.
 

Podcast #22 - ¡Estoy Vivo!

Este podcast y el # 23 “TIEMPO Y PACIENCIA”, son transcripción literal de un “Diario de Montaña” que Álvaro escribió durante los 13 días que estuvo perdido en el Volcán Tajumulco y que Rafael ha conservado todos estos años, lo que lo hace un testimonio especial porque todo fue escrito en el momento en que sucedían los acontecimientos.
Luego de más de una hora de retirada, los guerrilleros se sentaron a descansar, mientras la Vanguardia buscaba un paso porque lo que tenían al frente era un desfiladero que les impedía el paso. Estaban confiados porque se suponía que el Teniente Jorge venía atrás cubriéndoles la retaguardia. Pero no era así, Jorge había tomado bien el filo de la montaña sin percatarse que el Grueso se había metido en este abismo. Fue por esta razón que no se dieron cuenta que una compañía de Kaibiles (tropa élite del ejército de Guartemala) venía detrás de ellos pisándoles los talones.
De pronto se vieron bajo el fuego a quemarropa de los Kaibiles, lo último que recuerda Álvaro es salir volando debido a la explosión de una granada. Es una historia de sobrevivencia contada en primera persona.
This podcast and episode #23, “TIME AND PATIENCE,” are literal transcriptions from a “mountain diary” that Álvaro wrote during the 13 days he was lost on the Tajumulco Volcano. Rafael has preserved it all these years, making it a special testimony because everything was written as the events were unfolding.
After more than an hour of retreat, the guerrilla fighters sat down to rest while the Vanguard searched for a way forward, as they were facing a ravine that blocked their path. They felt confident, assuming Lieutenant Jorge was behind them, covering the rear. But that wasn’t the case—Jorge had followed the mountain ridge without realizing that the main group had descended into the abyss. That’s why they didn’t notice that a company of Kaibiles—elite troop from the Guatemalan army—was right behind them, hot on their heels.
Suddenly, they came under point-blank fire from the Kaibiles. The last thing Álvaro remembers is being thrown through the air by the explosion of a grenade. It’s a survival story told in the first person.

Era una columna numerosa, compuesta por alrededor de cincuenta guerrilleros, de los cuales casi la mitad eran jóvenes —prácticamente niños— que se habían refugiado recientemente en el Frente para evitar ser reclutados por el Ejército y enviados al servicio militar. En medio de la oscuridad absoluta y avanzando con extrema cautela, lograron romper el cerco enemigo. Así comenzaba una larga marcha que les tomaría cuatro días hasta reunirse con los compañeros del Frente “Luis Ixmatá”. El comandante Aníbal decidió dividir las fuerzas: Álvaro permaneció con él, mientras que su hermana fue asignada a otra unidad. La tranquilidad duró poco. El Ejército capturó a dos campesinos colaboradores que acababan de entregar suministros al campamento. Era el 19 de agosto de 1982 cuando un batallón de Kaibiles, guiado por los campesinos capturados, asaltó el campamento. Los guerrilleros lograron retirarse, pero el guía se equivocó de ruta y los condujo hacia un desfiladero.
It was a large column, made up of around fifty guerrilla fighters, nearly half of whom were young—practically children—who had recently taken refuge with the Front to avoid being conscripted into military service by the Army. In total darkness and moving with extreme caution, they managed to break through the enemy’s encirclement. Thus began a long march that would take four days until they could reunite with their comrades from the “Luis Ixmatá” Front. Commander Aníbal decided to split the forces: Álvaro stayed with him, while his sister was assigned to another unit. The calm didn’t last long. The Army captured two peasant collaborators who had just delivered supplies to the camp. It was August 19, 1982, when a battalion of Kaibiles, guided by the captured peasants, stormed the camp. The guerrillas managed to retreat, but the guide took a wrong turn and led them into a ravine.

Era abril de 1982. Finalmente, el grupo de radistas vuela a Managua y, luego de una corta estancia, Álvaro viaja a México para coordinar la llegada de los radios comprados en Panamá y enviados por valija diplomática cubana.
A finales de junio, en la ciudad fronteriza mexicana de Tapachula, Álvaro se reúne con Meme, recientemente nombrado comandante del nuevo frente “El Brote”, muy cercano a la frontera con México. Juntos cruzan la frontera y llegan al campamento “El Pavo”. Álvaro se reencuentra con su hermana y, muy poco tiempo después, el Ejército lanza una ofensiva con tropas de élite, artillería y aviación.
En medio del fuego, Meme decide salir hacia México y le pide a Álvaro que lo acompañe. Sin embargo, a última hora cambia de parecer y le indica que apoye al capitán Ariel, quien los llevaría al volcán Tajumulco para reunirse con el comandante Aníbal en el frente “Luis Ixmatá”. Así inicia una gran retirada, con varios días de marcha.
 
 
It was April 1982. At last, the group of radio operators flew to Managua and, after a brief stay, Álvaro traveled to Mexico to coordinate the arrival of the radios purchased in Panama and sent via Cuban diplomatic pouch.
At the end of June, in the Mexican border city of Tapachula, Álvaro met with Meme, who had recently been appointed commander of the new front “El Brote,” located very close to the Mexican border. Together, they crossed the border and arrived at the camp known as “El Pavo.” Álvaro reunited with his sister, and shortly afterward, the Army launched an offensive with elite troops, artillery, and air support.
Amid the gunfire, Meme decided to head back to Mexico and asked Álvaro to accompany him. However, at the last moment, he changed his mind and told Álvaro to support Captain Ariel, who would lead them to the Tajumulco Volcano to meet with Commander Aníbal at the “Luis Ixmatá” front. Thus began a major retreat, involving several days of marching.

Al día siguiente de despedirse de Jorge, Álvaro, Neto, José Comones y Héctor continuaron su viaje en autobús hasta llegar a Managua, Nicaragua, donde fueron trasladados a una finca en las afueras de la ciudad.
Allí se encontraban los padres de Álvaro y también su hermana. En esta finca había más de 150 combatientes que, o bien se preparaban para viajar a Cuba a entrenarse, o regresaban de Cuba rumbo a los frentes guerrilleros del EGP, FAR y ORPA. Aquí se conocerían los futuros radistas.
En este capítulo conocemos un poco más sobre las unidades militares donde se entrenaban los guerrilleros de toda América Latina. Acompañamos al grupo de Álvaro en su formación como radistas y somos testigos, a través de sus ojos, de la firma de la unidad entre las diferentes organizaciones insurgentes, que más tarde se nombrarían "Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG)". Se pone en marcha el operativo de adquisición del equipo necesario y su traslado, junto con el grupo de radistas, hacia los frentes guerrilleros.
The day after saying goodbye to Jorge, Álvaro, Neto, José Comones, and Héctor continued their journey by bus until they reached Managua, Nicaragua, where they were taken to a farm on the outskirts of the city.
There, Álvaro’s parents, and his sister were also present. At this farm, there were more than 150 combatants who were either preparing to travel to Cuba for training or returning from Cuba en route to the guerrilla fronts of the EGP, FAR, and ORPA. It was here that the future radio operators would meet. In this chapter, we learn more about the military units where guerrilla fighters from across Latin America received their training.
We follow Álvaro’s group through their training as radio operators and witness, through Álvaro’s eyes, the signing of the unity agreement among the different insurgent organizations, which would later be named the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG). The operation to acquire the necessary equipment is set in motion, along with the transfer of the radio operator group to the guerrilla fronts.
